Description
The Bonefish Puff is a Bahamas classic. The hot orange chenille head is the whole story — bonefish grubbing on white sand flats key in on flashes of color the way a redfish keys on a dark shrimp on grass. That orange puff is a "come look" signal, and it works.
Underneath the puff sits a set of silver bead-chain eyes that ride the fly hook-point up on turtle grass or hard sand without snagging. A soft white craft fur wing and grizzly hackle tail with pearl flash finish the profile. The whole thing lands soft — critical when a tailing bonefish is inside 40 feet.
What eats it: Bonefish first and foremost. On the same trip, permit will look at it, and small barracuda will crush it. It also fishes well for baby tarpon in mangrove creeks.
How to fish it: Lead the fish by six to eight feet. Let it sink to the bottom before the first strip. Short, sharp strips with pauses — the fly darts and drops. Most eats happen on the drop. When you see the fish flare or turn, strip-set hard.
