Description
The Crazy Charlie tuned for skinny water. Same fundamental Bob Nauheim silhouette that anchors every serious bonefish box, but with silver bead-chain eyes instead of dumbbells. Bead chain lands soft, sinks slow, and lets you drop a fly on a tailing bone in eight inches of water without spooking the fish.
Hot pink craft fur wing over a pearl mylar body with a hot pink thread hot spot at the head. Blue holographic flash tail. Bead-chain eyes sized to the hook — larger silver bead chain on the #4, smaller silver bead chain on the #6, both matched by the tyer to give the fly a balanced hook-point-up ride at the right sink rate for its size. Hand-tied on Gamakatsu SL11-3H — the 3X-strong tin-plated saltwater hook that holds up to a full week of bones and small permit.
Two sizes for two situations:
- #4 (Large Bead Chain) — for bigger bones on the edge of a flat, or when you need the fly to be seen at slightly longer distance. The larger silhouette pushes water and triggers reaction eats.
- #6 (Small Bead Chain) — for tailing bones, spooky fish in gin-clear water, and the shallowest flats. Small profile, soft entry, slow sink. The fly you throw when a bigger, splashier presentation would blow the fish off.
Why pink? Pink is the "come look" color on the flats. Under equatorial sun over white sand or grass, hot pink is one of the most visible colors from a bonefish's perspective — mimicking spawning shrimp coloration and triggering both feeding and reaction eats. When your tan Crazy Charlie gets refused, tie on pink.
What eats it: Bonefish first. Small permit will inhale it. Redfish and specks on the marsh crush pink flies. Baby tarpon in mangrove creeks. Sheepshead when they want a shrimp.
How to fish it: Lead the fish six to eight feet, let the fly settle without stripping, then short, sharp strips with pauses. Most eats come on the drop. Watch for the flare or turn — the bone will change direction to eat. Strip-set hard on the eat.
Sizes: #4 and #6. Hand-tied on Gamakatsu SL11-3H.
