Crazy Charlie Fly Pattern

The Crazy Charlie is the original weighted bonefish fly and one of the most-fished saltwater patterns ever tied. Bob Nauheim developed it on Andros Island, Bahamas in 1977 after watching bonefish repeatedly eat glass minnows over sandy flats. He tied a sparse, silver-flashed fly with bead-chain eyes so it would sink slowly, land soft, and ride hook-point up. It worked immediately. Within a few years, every guide in the Bahamas was fishing it. It has since caught bonefish in every fishery on earth.

Why it works

  • Hook-point up: the bead-chain eyes flip the fly so it lands and rides with the hook point up, dramatically reducing snags on hard-bottom flats.
  • Slow sink: bead chain provides just enough weight to sink the fly at the pace a real shrimp or small crustacean sinks \u2014 not the fast plunge of a dumbbell-eye fly.
  • Sparse profile: minimal materials mean minimal splash on the cast and a natural silhouette in the water.
  • Universal color logic: tan for sand, pink for pale bottom, pearl or white for glass minnow imitations. Three colors cover almost every fishery.

How to fish it

Land the fly 6\u201310 feet ahead of the fish. Let it settle to the bottom. When the bonefish closes, make one tiny strip \u2014 an inch, not a foot \u2014 and pause. Bones eat on the pause. A hard strip is the fastest way to spook a fish that was already coming to eat.

When to fish it

Any bonefish flat with a firm bottom (sand, marl, coral rubble). Also crushes on hard-bottom permit and larger reef species. Less useful over deep grass where the sparse profile disappears \u2014 use a bulkier shrimp or crab in those situations.

How to tie it

Traditional Crazy Charlie recipe:

  • Hook: Size 4 to 8 standard bonefish hook (Tiemco 811S, Gamakatsu SL11-3H, or equivalent saltwater hook)
  • Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 in a color matching the fly body
  • Eyes: Small silver bead-chain, tied on top of the hook shank (so the fly rides hook-point up when the eyes flip it)
  • Tail: Sparse bucktail or calf tail in the fly's color
  • Body: Silver mylar tinsel wrapped over the hook shank, then coated with UV resin or head cement for durability
  • Wing: Sparse calf tail or synthetic fibers laid over the top, tied at the eye

Modern variants

Countless variants exist \u2014 rubber-leg Charlies, epoxy-body Charlies, Gotchas (which are essentially a Charlie evolution).
