How to fish a baitfish fly

Baitfish patterns are all about matching the movement of fleeing bait. Use a strip-strip-pause retrieve: two quick strips to make the fly dart, then a pause to let it flutter and sink — most strikes come on that pause, when the fly looks like a wounded, easy meal. In current, cast up and across and let the fly swing through likely holding water. Around bait balls, snook and redfish, speed it up; for lazy summer trout, slow everything down.

How to choose the right baitfish pattern

• Match the bait size: when fish are keyed on tiny glass minnows, a huge fly gets refused. Carry small (2–3"), medium (3–4") and large (5"+) profiles so you can match what's actually in the water.
• Clouser vs. Deceiver: Clousers ride hook-up and get down fast — best for reds on the bottom and current seams. Deceivers push water with a bigger baitfish silhouette — best for snook, stripers and blitzing surf fish.
• Color to water clarity: chartreuse/white and clear flash in stained water; natural olive, tan, and gray over grass and clear flats; all-white or all-black at low light and night.
