Gotcha Fly Pattern

The Gotcha is the most-fished bonefish fly on earth. Jim McVay tied the original in the mid-1980s in the Bahamas, essentially as a variation of the Crazy Charlie built from carpet fibers and pearl mylar he found around a Bahamian resort. It has since accounted for more bonefish caught than any other single pattern and is a standard fly in every bonefish destination on the planet.

Why it works

  • Hook-point up: weighted eyes tied on top of the shank flip the fly so it lands and rides hook-up, cutting snags on hard-bottom flats.
  • Segmented pearl body: the pearl mylar body flashes at the right subtle level for the shrimp and small crustaceans bonefish actually eat.
  • Sparse, moving wing: a small wing of craft fur, calf tail, or synthetic that pulses on the strip.
  • Adaptable weight: tied with bead-chain for skinny water, small dumbbell for cruising fish, or extra-small dumbbell for the average flat.

How to fish it

Same rules as the Crazy Charlie. Land it soft, 6\u201310 feet in front of the fish. Let it settle. When the bonefish sees it and closes, one small strip and a long pause. Almost every eat comes on the pause. If a fish follows without eating, resist the urge to strip faster \u2014 usually the answer is to let the fly sit still on the bottom.

When to fish it

Every bonefish fishery on earth \u2014 Bahamas, Belize, Turks and Caicos, Christmas Island, Cuba, Florida Keys, Seychelles. Also crushes on hard-bottom permit, smaller reef species, and (in larger sizes) inshore reds and specks. Less useful in deep grass, where a bulkier profile wins.

How to tie it

  • Hook: Size 4 to 8 saltwater hook (Tiemco 811S, Gamakatsu SL11-3H, or equivalent)
  • Thread: Pink or tan 6/0 (classic Gotcha color)
  • Eyes: Small silver or gold bead-chain, or extra-small dumbbell, tied on top of the shank
  • Tail: Pearl Krystal Flash or similar mylar
  • Body: Pearl braid or diamond braid wrapped forward
  • Wing: Sparse tan craft fur, calf tail, or synthetic fiber tied at the eye, laying over the top of the fly
  • Optional: UV resin over the body for durability

Color and weight guide

  • Tan: default, works everywhere
  • Pink: Bahamas / clean water / sand bottom
  • Pearl or white: glass minnow imitations, deeper water
  • Chartreuse: stained water and low light
  • Bead-chain eyes: tailing fish under 2 ft of water
  • Extra-small dumbbell: cruising fish, 2\u20134 ft
  • Small dumbbell: deeper water, current, or when you need faster sink

Common Gotcha variants

  • Christmas Island Gotcha: a heavier, larger variant tied for the deeper backreef of Christmas Island. Often in orange or pink.
  • Ghost Gotcha: pure white or near-transparent version for pressured fish.
  • Bunny Gotcha: substitutes rabbit strip for the wing. More movement, slightly bulkier.
  • Electric Chicken Gotcha: chartreuse-and-pink version for stained water and low light.
  • Gotcha Crab: combines the Gotcha body with a small crab profile \u2014 crushes on hard-bottom permit.
  • Bare Bones Gotcha: stripped-down minimalist version for spooky fish.
