How to fish a bonefish fly

Bonefish feed head-down, rooting the bottom, so the goal is a soft, leading presentation. Cast 3–4 feet ahead of a cruising or tailing fish, let the fly sink to the bottom, then give short, gentle strips to kick up a small puff — imitating a shrimp or crab scooting away. When a bone tips down on the fly, keep stripping slowly until you feel weight, then strip-set. A splashy cast on top of the fish is the fastest way to spook the school.

How to choose the right bonefish fly

• Weight to depth: unweighted or bead-chain eyes for skinny water and tailing fish; lead or heavier dumbbell eyes for deeper flats and current so the fly gets down fast.
• Bottom color: tan and pink over sand, olive and brown over turtle grass, and brighter patterns in off-color or deeper water.
