Saltwater flies by species
Redfish (Gulf, Carolinas, Texas)
Crabs and shrimp in sizes 2 to 1/0. Start with our Redfish Flies collection. Weedless is standard for Louisiana marsh.
Small shrimp and crabs in sizes 4 to 8, tied light and sparse. Start with our Bonefish Flies collection.
Tarpon (Florida, Gulf, backcountry)
Baitfish, toads, and bunny patterns in sizes 1/0 to 3/0. Start with our Tarpon Flies collection.
Permit
Merkin-style crabs and small flexo patterns in sizes 1 to 4. Land soft, no strip, long drift. See Crab Flies.
Snook, jacks, ladyfish
Baitfish patterns in sizes 1 to 2/0. Deceivers, Clousers, and mullet-profile streamers around bait schools, dock lights, and mangroves.
Speckled trout
Small baitfish and shrimp in sizes 4 to 2. White, chartreuse, and pearl. Bent-back patterns are gold under lights at night.

All our FINATICS-tied saltwater flies use:
Chemically-sharpened saltwater hooks (Ahrex, Gamakatsu, Owner, or equivalent)
Synthetic fibers rated for salt (no wool, no untreated bucktail)
Mono weed guards on marsh patterns as standard
UV-cured resin heads where applicable, not glue that fails after one fish
We fish these flies ourselves in Louisiana, and we source partner-tyer flies (FlySmith Flies, MAC Flies, The Dirty Loaf, Rainy's) that meet the same durability bar.
What separates a good saltwater fly from a bad one
Not the flash. Not the color. It's the sink rate and the hook up profile. A saltwater fly that sits nose-up in the water column and sinks at the right speed for the depth you're fishing catches fish. Every other detail — color, eye style, exact material blend — is a distant second. When you build your box, buy the same pattern in three weights before you buy three different patterns in the same weight.
Starter saltwater box (any species)
2 crabs, size 2 (bead chain and small dumbbell)
2 shrimp, size 2 (weedless, dark and light)
2 baitfish streamers, size 1 (Clouser or Deceiver profile)
1 topwater popper, size 2
1 specialty pattern for the target species (toad for tarpon, small crab for permit, etc.)
