Freshwater Flies

Our freshwater fly selection is built around the fish most American fly anglers actually target: trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill and other panfish, and carp. Below is a straight-shooter's guide to what to fish and when.

Trout

Nymphs: The Flashback Pheasant Tail (bead head) is the single most useful trout fly on this page. Sizes 12 to 18. Fish it under an indicator or as the point fly in a two-nymph rig. Also stock a bead-head Hare's Ear and a small Perdigon.

Streamers: A weighted Woolly Bugger (our LA Woolly Bugger BH) in olive, black, and rust — sizes 6 to 10 — covers most trout streamer work. Slow strip, dead drift, or twitch through pools.

Dries and terrestrials: Small foam terrestrials for summer, our Cicada Dry Fly during hatches or as a hopper-dropper anchor.

Bass (largemouth and smallmouth)

Poppers: Our Bayou Banger is a compact popping fly that works on lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. First hour of light and last hour of light.

Streamers: Bunny leeches, small Clousers, and sculpin patterns in sizes 4 to 1/0. Chartreuse and white on grass lakes, black-purple in stained water.

Baby baitfish: Low Water Minnow and Simple Baitfish in size 4 and 2 imitate the shad and shiners bass actually eat.

Panfish (bluegill, redear, crappie)

Small poppers, sponge spiders, and micro-buggers in sizes 8 to 12. Panfish fly-fishing is the best entry point for kids and beginners — high hook-up rate, low frustration.

Carp

Carp eat crayfish and nymphs. Small weighted crayfish patterns in size 4 to 8. Sight-cast, land soft, and let the fly hit bottom right in front of a feeding fish. See the Carp Maul from our BlueLineCo. partner tyer — a proven pattern.

How to think about a freshwater box

Cover the water column with the fewest patterns possible. A functional starter box:

• 3 nymphs (Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Perdigon) in size 14
• 2 Woolly Buggers (olive and black) in size 8
• 2 dry flies or terrestrials for summer
• 2 small poppers for bass and panfish
• 1 sculpin or minnow streamer for cool-water work

Ten flies. Enough to fish any trout stream, warm-water pond, or small river in North America.
