Conditions as of June 3, 2026 · Early Summer
The Quick Read
Montana is in its early-summer transition. The lower Madison is fishable with caddis going strong in the afternoons and evenings, the Missouri near Craig is in good shape, and the Yellowstone is dropping and should come into play soon. The play right now: fish the Madison and Missouri with caddis and baetis programs, lead with nymphs when flows bump, and watch the Yellowstone for the green-light as runoff drops — with late June and July shaping up as the strongest window.
Current Conditions
On the Madison, the lower river is fishable with caddis activity, afternoons and evenings best for bugs, and generally good clarity through runoff; the Madison outside the Park is a solid option with BWOs and caddis in play. Gauges show the Madison River below Ennis Lake at McAllister reading 4.32 on June 3 at 7:00 PM MDT.
The Yellowstone is dropping and expected to come into play very soon, with late June and July looking strongest; note that there are bear-related closures in the Yellowstone/Firehole corridor, so check access before heading in. The Missouri near Craig and Wolf Creek is in good shape for this time of year — a nymphing game when flows rise, and good dry-fly fishing over baetis when flows stabilize.
What's Biting
Trout across all three rivers. On the Madison, caddis are the main early-June player with BWOs in the mix and caddis pupa important before and during the hatch. On the Missouri, baetis, caddis emergers, scuds, sowbugs, and midges are active. The Yellowstone is dropping toward better fishing, with PMDs, BWOs, and caddis building in the system.
What to Throw
Cover the caddis hatch and the subsurface baetis game:
- Super Pupa caddis, #12 — the lower Madison caddis answer. Shop our Nymphs.
- Parachute Adams, #12–#22 — all-purpose dry for rising fish. See Dry Flies.
- Pat's Rubberlegs, #6–#10 (coffee/black) — big-stone nymph that anchors a rig. Browse Nymphs.
- Juju Baetis / RS2 Emerger, #18–#22 — Missouri baetis staples. Check Euro Flies and Nymphs.
- White Zonker / Clouser crayfish, #6–#10 — when flows bump and bigger trout want a meal. Shop Streamers.

Technique & Where-To
Fish the Madison with nymphs and caddis-focused rigs in the lower river, especially afternoons and evenings; target seams and banks where rising fish show during the hatch, and keep a streamer or crayfish handy if flows bump. On the Missouri, lead with nymphs during rising water and switch to dries over baetis when flows stabilize. For the Yellowstone, watch for improving conditions as the drop continues and be ready to shift hard into the river once access and flows line up — and respect the bear-safety closures.
Seasonal Outlook — Next Few Weeks
The Madison should stay solid for caddis and BWO fishing with improving dry-fly windows as early summer settles in. The Yellowstone looks poised to improve quickly, with late June and July shaping up as the strongest window. The Missouri should remain a strong early-summer option, especially if flows stabilize enough to unlock consistent baetis dry-fly fishing; if not, nymphing stays the safe bet.
